Guardians of the Bay

Fueled by youth, passion and camaraderie

THE LITTLE RED DOT’S MIGHTY DEFENDERS

Relatively new to the international keelboat racing scene, the Singapore team will be heading into the SSL Gold Cup as underdogs. But what the team lacks in experience, they more than make up for in courage, confidence and a never-say-die attitude. It is precisely this fighting spirit that has put the young city-state on the world map of dinghy sailing. Each and every single one of the team members have represented Singapore at some level, with three team members having competed at the Olympics.

Additionally, Singapore has medaled at several high-profile keelboat events in the region. The country’s sailors clinched the gold medal in Match Racing at the Asian Games in 2006 and 2014, and the silver medal at the Nations Cup Oceania Regional Finals in 2015. Singapore also hosted and won the DBS Marina Bay Cup in 2019.

The captain

Jovina Choo OLY

The captain of SSL Team Singapore has participated in some of the biggest events in sailing – and will soon add the SSL Gold Cup to her impressive resume. In a career spanning over 20 years, Jovina has finished top 3 in over 30 Optimist, 420, 470 and keelboat competitions at the national, regional and international level. Her most recent achievement was clinching the gold medal with the Singapore keelboat team at the Saemangeum Cup International Regatta in Korea. A natural-born leader, Jovina has been the captain of numerous school and national teams, and holds the key to charting the future of Singapore keelboat sailing.

THE LEADERS

Daniella Ng

Skillful, athletic and agile, Daniella Ng is no stranger to keelboat racing. At the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines, she was not just the only girl in the Singapore keelboat team, but the only girl racing in the keelboat event. She represented Singapore as a junior during the 2007 SEA Games and again in 2015 where she won the women’s keelboat events.

Bernie Chin

Bernie started his sailing journey at the age of 10 on the Optimist, Byte and Laser and is one of the most bemedaled sailors on the team.

He is the 2014 Asian Youth Games and Youth Olympic Games Champion, 2015 and 2017 Southeast Asian Games Gold medalist, Youth World Champion in 2015, picking up medals in 2013 and 2016 edition as well.

Ryan Lo OLY

Introduced to sailing from the age of 7, Ryan has had a most illustrious sailing career. Currently campaigning on the Olympic circuit, Ryan is no stranger to competitions on the world stage, with his latest achievement being a 10th-place finish in a fleet of 163 ILCA 7 dinghies at the prestigious Princess Sofea Regatta 2022, held in Mallorca.

Growing up, Ryan started amassing his medals from a young age, with a SEA Games bronze medal at the age of 13 and an Optimist Team Racing Gold at the World Championships the year after. The transition to the ILCA (then Laser) class was a natural one. Some of his career highlights include racing at ISAF Youth Worlds, SEA Games, Asian Games and the 2020 Summer Olympics.

THE LEADERSTHE LEADERS

THE YOUTH FACTOR

With an average age of 25 years, Singapore will be one of the youngest sailing teams at the Gold Cup. Having been friends and teammates since they were kids, these sailors have an undeniable connection with one another. Together, their passion for sailing shines even brighter and they will stop at nothing to prove that they are an up-and- coming force to be reckoned with.
